Most of the attention for Congestion Pricing focuses on the $8 charge to enter below 60th Street, which obviously affects only drivers.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised more attention, and scrutiny, wasn't and isn't being put on the $1 surcharge that will be applied to any taxi or black car trip that starts or ends below 60th Street, Mon - Fri, 6am - 6pm. That surely affects many more residents and visitors.
Also, the taking back of the 8% tax exemption for monthly garage parking for residents seems to not be a sticking point for many folks.
Sure, congestion pricing will work as well as his through streets idea worked. He continues to surround himself with people that are inept at best. Look at Ed Skyler for instance. This is a guy that at one time got Henry Sterns water for him now he is a Deputy Mayor. He knows as much about this city as I do about Kabul. This Mayor has sold three thousand medallions since he has been in office and tour bus companies have grown as well. Lets talk about pedi cabs and horse drawn carriages as well that impede traffic. ALl of these efforts have made the city money but have left the streets congested. This mayor has taken way to much credit for a blueprint in place already from a previous administration. He has no personality and drones on if he doesnt get his way. People are sick of him. Cant wait for him to leave office and go away.

ReplyDeleteMany New Yorkers care not a rats ass about whether cars are charged $8 to enter Manhattan but care that our communities were ignored in the discussion.
As a disability activist, I cared whether people with disabilities who are totally dependent on their cars (big wheelchairs) to get into and around Manhattan. But I am more so concerned about the vast majority of New York’s w/ disabilities mis-served by NYCT's grossly access inadequate surface and subway systems. Our needs were barely addressed by the alleged mass transit improvements.
It was the Mayor’s arrogance which sent out reps from his office to meet with communities but were unprepared when peppered with question specific to the community transportation issues, When NYPIRG spear carriers they were not prepared to address the specific question germane to the community. I would love cleaner air, but congestion pricing below 61 St won't do much for Washington Heights. Our issue are the truck on their way to the GWB sprewing diesel fumes into our community.
We could have been tempted by being offered a Kingsbridge Plaza with a single bus shuttling Bronx riders (similar to the B39 on Delancy) across W 181 St rather than the multiplicity of empty Bx 3.11,13, 35 & 36 buses that keep 181 at a stand still from Amsterdam to B'way. We are not served by these buses, we're their parking lot! 178 from B'way to Ft Wash is a double sided parking lot, yes that is the approach to the GWB and formerly on street parking & now a lay over for Bx buses.
CB12M has been calling for a B39 that keeps dozens of Brooklyn buses at Washington Plaza. maybe if the Mayor weren't so arrogant, he might have realize that would be an offer we might not have refused!
